Air Canada and ITA Airways are strengthening their longstanding presence on the bases of a comprehensive codeshare agreement expected to offer travelers greater convenience and connectivity between Italy and Canada. Under the new agreement, which comes into effect 21 July 2025, travellers will have access to over 30 new itineraries with convenient connections via the airlines’ hubs in Rome and Toronto.

This new agreement complements Air Canada’s successful extensive network (including direct flights and dispensing intermodal rail services) between Canada and Italy. And ITA Airways, the Italian national airline, is using this codeshare to increase its visibility in Canada and the US, making North America its 1st major market beyond Europe.

The agreement enables Air Canada to market several ITA Airways-operated services out of Rome-Fiumicino under its code (AC). These are the domestic Italian routes of Lamezia Terme, Palermo, Catania, Firenze and Bari. Such destinations also include key international links in Africa with routes to Cairo, Tunis and Algiers (all subject to government approval) as well as Tel Aviv and Tirana.

ITA Airways, for its part, will add its flight code (AZ) on some routes served by Air Canada from Toronto Pearson International Airport. These connections in Canada include cities such as Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and St. John’s. ITA Airways customers will also benefit from a range of new pockets of service from Canada into major U.S. gateways such as Boston, Orlando, Dallas and Fort Lauderdale.

This code-sharing decision reinforces the strength of the growing relationship between Air Canada and ITA Airways. It is a building block of wider collaboration as ITA Airways readies itself for its planned joining of Star Alliance, expected in early 2026. The addition to Star Alliance will allow for customer benefits to be expanded, such as joining members’ flyer reward programs and being offered a wider range of connection flights.

Commenting on the news, the carrier said that the codeshare supports Air Canada’s plan to enhance its Italy service and that it continues to remain committed to strengthening its network in the market. During the summer, Air Canada has a significantly large Italy schedule, with a total of up to 39 flights per week offering over 13,000 seats per week. Last but not least, Air Canada expanded its Italian network to Montreal the recent addition of a new direct flight linking Montreal to Naples, offering direct access to the famous Amalfi coast. Naples adds to the airline’s existing Italian routes flying direct to Rome, Milan and Venice.

In addition, Air Canada partners with Trenitalia, Italy’s most important railway and the primary train operator, providing joint railway and air service that permits passengers arriving in Italy to travel beyond Rome Fiumicino to over 30 destinations throughout Italy by train. This integrated air-rail connectivity is expected to offer passengers more flexibility and convenience in traversing the length of the Italian peninsula.

ITA Airways is further establishing itself as Italy’s national carrier, with a total of 59 routes during peak summer, comprising 16 intercontinental, 27 international and 16 domestic services. At peak times of the year ITA Airways will add seasonal flights from Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate airports to highly popular Mediterranean destinations, such as Ibiza, Majorca, Menorca, Rhodes, Heraklion, Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lampedusa and Pantelleria.

Italian carrier has greatly broadened passenger opportunities with strong codeshare agreements with Lufthansa Group carriers – Lufthansa, SWISS International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Air Dolomiti – that provide customers with easy access to a further 100 + intercontinental destinations around the world, buying through-connections to those locations, as well as across Europe.

This important cooperation milestone will deliver greater international accessibility – with strong travel choices and convenient service for travel between Canada, Italy and beyond around the world.
